Edi Smockum, owner and Managing Director of thinkBIGGER!, began her career in television working for the award–winning Canadian producer Michael Maclear. She left the Great White North to come to the U.K. where she got the first job she applied for – with the BBC.
She worked in various departments at the BBC including Religion, Features and Documentaries before leaving it all behind to live and work in Paris with Radio France International.
Alongside this, Edi developed a passion for teaching and training – and inspiring new talent. She tutored for the short course unit of the National Film and Television School and successfully ran courses for the Documentary Filmmakers’ Group, Screen Yorkshire and Channel 4’s Diversity and Disability Scheme.
Edi was the first Sir Ray Tindle lecturer at the University of Buckingham, setting up a range of media courses for the university.
In 2007, she became head of Short Courses at the National Film & Television School where she set up a Diploma in Production Management and occasionally tutored for the MA in Documentary.
The same year she was asked by Alison Walsh at Channel 4 to manage a training scheme for disabled trainees and thinkBIGGER! was born.
